For the right word in the right place at the right time

Quote of the Moment

"My dear Watson, you as a medical man are continually gaining light as to the tendencies of a child by the study of his parents. Don't you see that the converse is equally valid? I have frequently gained my first real insight into the character of parents by studying their children."

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle  - 'The Adventure of the Copper Beeches'

"It was the willingness to find poetry in things around them that kept his life and Isabella's fresh, and they taught their children the secret of their elixir."

William Dean Howells  - 'Their Wedding Journey'

“And this I believe; that the free, exploring mind of the individual human is the most valuable thing in the world. And this I would fight for: the freedom of the mind to take any direction it wishes, undirected. And this I must fight against: any idea, religion or government which limits or destroys the individual.”

John Steinbeck, ‘East of Eden’

This page is dedicated to a modicum of literary self-indulgence. Naturally, that means it just has to include an editorial so that I can let off steam. Topics will be chosen on a spur-of-the moment basis, depending on what it is that is either exciting me or driving me crazy at the time of writing. The aim is to keep it interesting enough to engage you, to make you think or feel something and even, perhaps, to entice you to leave a comment by clicking on the 'add new comment' button below. Feel free to disagree, and any attempt to persuade me to change my mind is always welcome!

There will also be an ongoing section called ‘What Are You Reading Now?’ where I will be reviewing the latest book to find its way to my bedside, and where I would encourage you to tell the rest of us what little gem you have discovered lately. I am hoping this will help us all to see what is out there, be it new, classic or obscure.

I would also love to hear about your loves and hates where specific books and/or authors are concerned (also by clicking on the 'add new comment' button), but be prepared to give us a good reason!

Once in a while, I will be publishing students’ stories, poems or articles on the blog page, with the appropriate permissions in place. This will not only help them to get over initial shyness of having their work read, but will hopefully spur others out there to get writing. We may run writing competitions at a later date for readers of the blog, depending on interest. We will try to make it fun for all involved.

Finally, there will be a regularly updated quotation section to inspire you (or just to make you laugh). This will include quotes from authors, about authors, or just a wonderful line here or there from a novel, story or poem.  If you come across something a little different, please send your favourite quote via email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it , and we will post it if the editor allows it past her intense scrutiny.
We do reserve the right to change the content of the blog page at any time, just to keep you on your toes.
